Big Dream, Wee Spa: How Anam Built Her Business in Holytown
When Anam opened the doors to her new beauty salon, Wee Spa, in Holytown, North Lanarkshire, she described it as one of the proudest moments of her life.
It marked the point where years of study, hard work, and determination finally came together -supported by the guidance and encouragement she received through the Working for Families (WFF) programme, delivered locally by PeoplePlus.
Building confidence and taking the first steps
When Anam first connected with PeoplePlus, she already had a dream of opening her own salon. But like many parents juggling family and studies - she’s a mum of three and now also a university student - the challenge was knowing where to start.
Through the WFF programme, Anam received one-to-one support from Nazar Hussain Enterprise Advisor, advice and encouragement from Bene Briggs-McKinlay, Community Engagement (pictured below with Anam), and a beauty kit funded by PeoplePlus to help her set up her first mobile business.
That mobile business gave her the confidence to take the next step. But Anam made herself a promise: she wouldn’t open the kit until she had a real salon of her own.
Now that she does, she’s finally unpacked it.
“I couldn’t have done it without PeoplePlus”
When Bene popped in to visit recently, she found Anam “absolutely glowing with pride.”
Anam told her how the advice, financial help, and belief shown by the PeoplePlus team gave her the motivation to keep going - to complete her diplomas, balance family life, and finally launch her business.
“I couldn’t have done it without PeoplePlus. They helped me believe in myself. That made all the difference.”
About Working for Families
The Working for Families programme helps parents in the North Lanarkshire area in Scotland to find work, start their own business or grow their existing business by offering tailored advice and practical support.
In Anam’s case, that support turned ambition into action - and a mobile beauty idea into a fully operational salon offering a range of treatments to her growing client base.
“She’s built something really special,” said Bene. “Seeing the pride she takes in it reminds us exactly why we do what we do.”
Looking ahead
Anam’s next goal is to continue her university studies while growing Wee Spa and building a loyal client community in Holytown.
For the PeoplePlus team, it’s another reminder of how personalised support, belief, and practical help can change someone’s story - not just for today, but for their future.
