A Fresh Start

Helping people move on from the justice system and into sustainable employment doesn't just change their own lives. It benefits families, communities and society as a whole, reducing reoffending and giving people a genuine stake in the future they're building. Programmes like Fresh Start in Scotland exist to make that possible.

PeoplePlus delivers employability support across the UK, helping people move closer to work no matter what barriers stand in their way. Fresh Start is a programme we deliver in North Lanarkshire, designed specifically for people who have been touched by the justice system in some way, giving them the tools, confidence and practical support to move into sustainable employment. Here, we share one story of success from the programme. To protect his identity, we haven't used his name.

He joined the Fresh Start programme through a referral from an Engagement Officer at Airdrie Jobcentre, carrying previous convictions that had made finding work feel close to impossible. Like many people in his position, he had learned to expect little from previous support and wasn't sure how far this one would actually get him.

His first sessions were spent one-to-one with a key worker, working through his options across employment, self-employment and education to find the route that suited him best. From there, the support became practical. He worked on his CV, learned how to approach applications, and built up his interview technique through individual coaching, mock interviews and group practice. Alongside this, his Key Worker helped him get to grips with effective job search methods, and stayed with him through every application, keeping his motivation up during what can be a discouraging process.

What set his support apart was how it dealt with the barrier at the centre of everything: his record. Rather than treating it as something to work around, his Key Worker helped him understand how to manage disclosure with employers, turning what had felt like a dead end into something he could speak to with more confidence. That confidence built steadily. He started approaching his job search with real energy, and the goals he was working towards beyond employment, learning to drive, moving into his own flat, gave the whole process a purpose that went further than simply finding a job.

The support didn't stop once he had an offer. In his first week of work, Fresh Start helped with his travel costs, bridging the gap before his first pay came through. His Key Worker stayed on the phone with him to help with anything that came up in the workplace, and gave him guidance on budgeting and paying bills so he could manage his new income with confidence rather than worry.

Looking back, he has said he was genuinely grateful for the support he received, support that believed in him at a point when many services would have written him off because of his record. He has since recommended Fresh Start to others facing similar circumstances, keen for them to have the same chance he did.

Today, he is in full-time work and doing well in his role, with his confidence changed and a clear sense of direction ahead of him. He has already started looking into driving lessons, and his next goal, moving into a flat of his own, is firmly in sight. With the right support at the right time, he hasn't just found a job. He has found a future he is building for himself.
