Having successfully delivered self-employment programmes to five prisons in England, PeoplePlus has just completed its first self-employment pilot in Scotland in HMP Low Moss. PeoplePlus delivers education in 22 prisons across England, and we are proud to be able to offer our 30 year experience in self-employment advice and position as the market leader in Scotland for self-employment services and expertise to HMP Low Moss.

Taking place over two weeks, with two hours training every weekday, the prisoners learnt about business planning, cashflow, marketing and bookkeeping, taught by two of our highly experienced Business Advisors. The prisoners were also able to develop their own business ideas and talk these through with our Advisors. They were able to study independently after each session, where they could use the learning materials in their own time to develop their final business plan, applying in-session and incell
learning to their business ideas.

All of the prisoners who took part not only successfully completed the course, they commented on how much they’d enjoyed the sessions and benefited from the Advisors’ experience and learning,  with all of them saying they felt confident to succeed in self-employment. One of the key things they observed was the knowledge of the Advisors and their ability to deliver the learning in a way that all the prisoners could clearly understand and articulate, despite having learners of vast ability.

Some feedback from the prisoners attending the workshops has been:

"The course has helped me go for it as I now know I can do tax and run a company well”
“I enjoyed the workshop as it filled in the gaps on self-employment that I had previously worried about”
“I enjoyed learning about how to run a business as it is something I’ve always wanted to do”
“This course should be done in all prisons

PeoplePlus is keen to hear from any more prisons who would like to run a self-employment initiative in their prison. Simply email [email protected] to discover how.
