The team at PeoplePlus received a request from the Safer Custody Manager asking for the IAG (Information, Advice and Guidance) Team at HMP Nottingham to engage with a prisoner.

Prisoner Billy was on constant watch and had also spent time in the Constant Watch Unit for various internal offences. He had previously refused to engage with the regime and other departments with overall poor behaviour.

Safer Custody were looking to end the constant watch status and integrate Billy back into normal regime, so accessing education, training and employment activities were a priority need for him.

PeoplePlus IAG Careers Advisor Lee visited the wing to engage with Billy, introduce himself, explain his role and how he could support Billy to access a suitable and purposeful activity. During the session Billy engaged well and answered all questions required. They discussed the short term and long-term goals that Billy wanted to achieve, and how he could progress towards these goals.

Billy shared with Lee that his father has his own painting and decorating business which he wished to work for on his release. The Painting and Decorating course offered in prison education was not yet accessible to Billy as he was a ‘high risk’ prisoner, and he would need to be in the low or medium risk categories before he could be put forward for the course. Lee therefore explained to Billy, that this would be a long-term aim and they discussed what the short term possibilities were.

Lee suggested that short term employment in one of the Industries Workshops would be a good place to begin, and by working hard and showing positive behaviour Billy would have more opportunity to achieve towards his longer term goals. Billy was keen to do this and Lee made a recommendation on his behalf at the next meeting.

Billy is now back on normal regime and is attending a tea packing workshop every day where he has received good feedback from the instructors regarding his work ethics and contribution to the production targets.

If Billy maintains this behaviour and continues to engage with regimes his risk will be re-assessed, and he could drop to medium risk meaning he can apply for the painting and decorating course to start on his desired career path to work in the family business.
