Nicole, a single mother of four young children, had never worked before and was considering self-employment as a viable option to accommodate her childcare responsibilities. She launched her own sweets business, selling products both online and at events attended by her daughters.

Nicole joined the Fair Start Scotland service and began exploring self-employment opportunities in early January, with the guidance of Advisor Gordon.

Gordon assisted Nicole in drafting a business plan and a financial forecast using his templates. He also provided valuable advice on setting up bank accounts, managing bookkeeping, and understanding HMRC requirements. Initially concerned about these aspects of running a business, Nicole felt reassured by Gordon’s extensive knowledge in these areas.

Together, Nicole and Gordon explored the benefits of using a card reader for transactions at dance events, which Nicole purchased. This tool helped her capture sales she would have otherwise missed if she had only accepted cash.

Gordon also guided Nicole on pricing strategies, supplier management, and effective marketing techniques. He suggested various promotional materials, including business cards, leaflets, tabletop displays, and pop-up banners. Nicole has been very active on social media, leading to a steady stream of online orders throughout the year.

Nicole began trading at the start of February and is grateful for the support and guidance she received. She is thrilled with the progress of her business and has been highly proactive in marketing, packaging presentation, and administrative tasks.

Gordon has said “Nicole is close to the perfect example of someone listening and acting on our advice and I’m absolutely delighted with how much her business has progressed since she started trading.”

Nicole shared that the business has significantly improved her and her children's lives, and she is enjoying the journey so far.
