In celebration of International Women’s Day earlier in the month, PeoplePlus Cymru welcomed over 50 attendees to a vibrant and inspiring event in Cardiff, designed to empower, connect and elevate women across a range of employment sectors.

Bringing together professionals, employers and aspiring individuals, the day created an energising space for shared experiences, powerful conversations and meaningful connections all centred around driving positive change for women in the workplace.

The event was opened by Kelly Reynolds, Director of PeoplePlus Wales, who set the tone for the day by sharing her enthusiasm for celebrating the achievements and impact of women in business.

Attendees then heard from a range of inspiring speakers, each offering a unique perspective on career journeys, challenges and opportunities.

Catherine Teehan, Director of Employability and Outreach at Cardiff University, highlighted the impactful work being delivered through the university to support individuals into education and employment, showcasing the importance of accessible pathways and strong partnerships.

Lowri Evans, founder of LB Dance Academy, shared her journey from discovering a passion for dance at just three years old to performing on a major UK tour alongside Strictly Come Dancing’s Johannes Radebe. Now back in Cardiff running her own successful dance school, Lowri’s story demonstrated the power of passion, persistence and building something of your own.

Hannah Jenkins, Workforce Development Co-ordinator at Sacry, delivered an insightful session on women in construction. She highlighted the progress being made within the organisation, where 30% of the management team are women well above what is typically seen across the construction sector, particularly at leadership level. Her talk reinforced the importance of representation and continued efforts to open up opportunities for women in traditionally male-dominated industries.

Laura Abraham from Grown Up Business School delivered a truly inspiring talk, sharing her unconventional journey into finance and entrepreneurship. Despite facing challenges in education and having limited qualifications, Laura went on to build an award-winning business. Her key message resonated strongly with the audience: “You don’t need to be ‘ready’ to give things a go.”

The event also featured two young ambassadors from PeoplePlus, who are currently taking part in the Jobs Growth Wales+ programme. Through PeoplePlus, they have been given the opportunity to gain hands-on experience across events, employer engagement and administration. They spoke about how the experience is building their confidence, developing new skills and preparing them for future employment.

The day concluded with a lively jobs fair, connecting attendees with employers from a wide range of sectors including retail, construction and security - providing real opportunities to take the next step into employment.

Overall, the event was a powerful reminder of the importance of creating spaces where women can feel inspired, supported and empowered to achieve their goals.
