Ffion loves doing her apprenticeship alongside her job as a library assistant

Ffion, who is 24 years old and from Carmarthen in Wales, needed some support to find employment. Ffion has a Neurological condition, and she was worried that this may be a barrier. The Engage to Change project, who work across Wales to support young people who have a learning difficulty, learning disability and/or autism, were supporting Ffion when she signed up to the specialist recruitment agency ELITE. ELITE is a registered charity empowering people with disabilities or those at a disadvantage across South, Mid and West Wales. The opportunity to apply for a job as a Library Assistant for Cerebra came up and it was agreed that it would be a good role for Ffion so she applied and was successful.

As a result of her employment Ffion was able to access the Welsh Government Apprenticeship Scheme doing an NVQ Level 2 in Business Administration with PeoplePlus.

Ffion didn’t know much about apprenticeships, but she thought she “may as well give it a go” and PeoplePlus supported her to apply. Everyone felt the opportunity to do an apprenticeship alongside her recent role was well suited to her. Following the support she received from PeoplePlus she was able to start the apprenticeship.

Clare Thomas from PeoplePlus told us: “It has been a pleasure working with Ffion as she begins her apprenticeship journey. She has already proven herself to be a very motivated, determined and organised learner who understands the need for effective communication in order to achieve her short & long term goals”.

Ffion is enjoying doing her apprenticeship alongside her job as a library assistant.

Ffion told us:

“I love everything about my new job with Cerebra. After months of lockdown the routine of working is making a huge difference to my mental wellbeing and I’m looking after myself a lot better. I feel more confident and self-sufficient – travelling to work by myself is giving me greater independence”.
